10. Rock Star Finale w/ Trent Reznor, Lindsey Buckingham
Nine Inch Nails'
Trent Reznor hit the stage with "Copy of A" from his 2013 album
"Hesitation Marks." Fleetwood Mac singer/guitarist Lindsey Buckingham
hopped in with Dave Grohl, holding down the drums along with frequent
collaborator Josh Homme. Grohl teamed with Homme's Queens of the Stone Age on
their 2013 album. It was a great finale, representing a genre that quietly had
a solid year.
9. Pink (Again) Shows She's a Gymnast During "Try"
Let us not be jaded by the fact that
we’ve seen Pink do “that thing where she’s
an acrobat flying 100 feet over the audience with no safety net” again. It is amazing, always. Sure, the singer returned to
that 2010 well again on the GRAMMYs tonight for “Try.” But she killed it. So,
whatever.
8. Katy Perry Rides in with "Dark Horse"
After relatively quiet sets from
Beyonce, Lorde and Hunter Hayes, Perry and rapper Juicy J turned the GRAMMY
stage into a goth party for “Dark Horse.” Dancers, a makeshift horse, and
flames blazing around Perry made this one of the night’s most exciting
showings.
7. Beyonce and Jay Z Get "Drunk" Early
Beyonce and hubby Jay Z got things off
to a tipsy start with their “Drunk in Love” opener. With damp hair and a barely
there outfit, Bey looked like she was ready for a beach getaway. It made sense.
She rapped that she was ready for Jay to ride her surfboard. It wasn’t as
elaborate of an award show offering as Beyonce usually provides. No big band or
slew of dancers tonight. Just Jay and Bey, being a hot couple. That was enough
for most.
6. Pharrell's Distracting, Zany Hat
Pharrell’s
hat spawned a life of its own, becoming the target of Twitter attack because of
its obnoxiously large, park ranger vibe. See below:
5. Jay Z Gives Daughter Blue a "Sippy Cup"
Providing the evening’s most quotable line, ever-cool Jay Z
accepted his Best Rap/Sung Collaboration for his Justin Timberlake-assisted
“Holy Grail” by saying that his daughter is getting the GRAMMY… to drink from.
"I want to tell Blue, 'Daddy got a gold sippy cup for you," he said,
tilting his Grammy sideways.
4.
Taylor Swift Having More Fun than Everyone
Taylor perfomed her somber "Red" cut "All Too
Well" tonight, but was all joy watching her peers rock the stage. On
several occassions she hopped out of her chair to dance. She bopped heavy
during Kendrick Lamar's hardcore showing, and got sexy with her moves during
Beyonce's opener. Clearly, she had a blast tonight.
3. Daft
Punk, Pharrell and Stevie Wonder Go Old School
Daft Punk’s performance was as much of
a throwback as the Album of the Year-winning latest set was, bringing out
collaborator Nile Rodgers and icon Stevie Wonder. The stage was flipped into a
recording studio, where all but Daft Punk were performing “Get Lucky.”
Wearing all white, the robots would
soon appear at the control board as “Lucky” morphed into Chic’s 1978 disco jam
“Le Freak.” Punk spliced in a bit of their “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger,”
but soon the stage became Wonder’s as “Another Star” rang. The track is from
Stevie’s standout double album “Songs in the Key of Life.”
2. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Madonna Marry 33 Couples
Queen Latifah introduced the
award-winning duo, Mary Lambert and jazz man Trombone Shorty, saying "This
song is not a love song for some of us but for all of us.” As the performance
continued, “Same Love” served as a precursor to nuptials of 33 couples
exchanging vows and wedding at the Staples Center. And to seal the deal for the
gay and straight couples, Madonna walked through the stage's white gates to sing
her classic, “Open Your Heart.”
1.Kendrick and Imagine Dragons Mash
In an all-while outfit Kendrick Lamar
was anything but angelic during his mashup with Imagine Dragons. First came a
rousing, furious performance of his “M.A.A.D. City,” which transitioned into an
equally emphatic go at their smash "Radioactive” (which they won the Best
Rock Performance Grammy).
